Thoughts
The original short story upon which this was based was one of the first things by Rebecca Anderson I'd ever read, and it demonstrated her calibre as a writer. I was expecting to like this novel just as much as I liked the short story; I was not expecting to like it more. But I do; it's deeper and wider, more heart-wrenching, more questioning.
What hasn't changed is the fantastic descriptive prose that paints a multi-sensory picture that turns even waking up into poetry (see quote above).
The tag under the title on the cover is "Everything you believe is wrong"; and while there were certain things I anticipated due to foreknowledge (of the aforementioned story), others surprised me in a good way. There is knowledge, there is self-knowledge, and there is assumption. All of these are challenged, in one way or another.
I think one thing I come away with from this novel is that everyone has their own stories, and they aren't always what you think they are.
Read it. And bring a tissue.
