Young Fawn Bluefield and soldier-sorcerer Dag Redwing Hickory have survived magical dangers and found, in each other, love and loyalty. But even their strength and passion cannot overcome the bigotry of their own kin, and so, leaving behind all they have known, the couple sets off to find fresh solutions to the perilous split between their peoples.

Thoughts

I bought this hardback because I couldn't wait for the paperback. Now I think I should have. Not that it was bad, Bujold doesn't do bad, but it wasn't one of those treasured volumes. I still like Dag and Fawn, especially Fawn, but... this is such a slow-moving series. In one sense, that's true to the problems that are set up in this universe: they aren't things that have quick solutions. But then neither were the problems in the Sime~Gen universe something that had a quick solution... but then that series deals with the problems of culture by having multiple characters over a longer period of time, rather than following one particular set of characters in more detail.

It was still enjoyable, but I prefer Miles or Cazaril...

Re-Read Thoughts

I re-read this in preparation for reading Book 4 in this series. I skipped Book 2 in this re-read, because it had a gloomier mood in it than this one. I enjoyed it better this time around, because I knew what I was getting into, that it was slow-moving, with a few bright and dark spots.
