Learn how to make a two straw lei!
    Materials needed: Eyelash yarn – also called fun fur yarn. You will need at least 45/50 yards. I used about 50 yards each of two colors. Some smaller skeins are only 45 yards. That’s okay, but do look for longer ones! One, two, or three colors of yarn can work for this lei! Two large straws (bubble tea or milkshake straws work best) 10-12 feet of 3/8″ grosgrain ribbon (allow more if you want a large bow) Scissors A piece of tape A clothespin or binder clip

Useful how-to on figuring out mystery yarn, by using wraps-per-inch (and how to avoid some pitfalls!)

While this shows how to make a travelling Tic Tac Toe game from smooth rocks and a pre-made burlap bag, one could also crochet a bag with the board pattern as part of the design, rather than painting it on with paint-pens.

Useful method for determining the weight (thickness) of a mystery yarn.

Three methods of dyeing a ball of string so that it has colour gradations. The first method involves suspending the ball half in and half out of a bowl of dye; the other two methods require one to unwind the ball first.

The Russian Join is a knotless join which can be done with plyed yarn (one-ply yarn won't work). This tutorial is a good balance of pictures and explanation, makes the technique very clear.

This webapp enables one to inject randomosity into one's multicoloured projects; rather than doing, say, one row of Colour A, one row of Colour B, one row of Colour C, this helps one mix them up a bit. You choose from a palette of colours (not a lot, but a fair amount), put in the row-thickness one accepts, and it will generate a random pattern (e.g 4 rows of A, 2 rows of C, 1 row of B, 6 rows of C etc). If you don't like the pattern, refresh the result and it will give you a new one.

Pretty nifty.

This works on feltable yarns -- that is wool, alpaca etc -- by pulling and fluffing out the ends and then felting them together. Probably works better on single-ply yarns than tightly spun plied yarns.

Take your leftover scraps of yarn, join them together with a Russian Join and make one big ball of multicolour striped yarn.

While I'm not intending to do embroidery, I do use embroidery floss for crocheting jewellery and for kumihimo braiding, so it's good to know this tip for when I don't want to use six strands at once.

What I find of note in this is the how-to-cut T-shirt yarn instructions which are part of this article. This method uses the whole t-shirt, not just the torso. This is much less wasteful than other methods I've come across.

About felting one's crocheted (or other fabric) piece (which must be made of 100% wool, of course)

Plastic basket with holes + knitting needle + straw = poor man's Lazy Kate. If one has long enough rods/needles, one can use the box lengthways and thus be able to accomodate taller cones. If dealing with cones, one doesn't need the straw, since the inner cone should be able to turn freely.

Very useful yarn-joining technique. Much better than the standard square knot. Suits crochet and knitting, but not Kumihimo; the knot is still too visible.
