Old Merry
I thought I looked for adventure
But now I look for Sunset
and the long evenings with the King.
I thought I looked for exploits
but now the tales are taller than the hills
I can climb with comfort.
I thought I looked for great deeds
but now the youngsters shout
and small deeds are all I have time for.
I thought I looked for progress
and never to be left behind
but now the world is turning
faster than I see.
It will turn on
without me.

(This is a poem about Merriadoc Brandybuck, many years after the
events of The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien)
